SANTA PHYSICS 101 Sunday, December 21, 2008 |

No one really knows how Santa delivers all of those presents, but this is a funny explanation according to physics as we know it.

SANTA PHYSICS 101

1) No known species of reindeer can fly. BUT there are 300,000 species of living organisms yet to be classified, and while most of these are insects and germs, this does not COMPLETELY rule out flying reindeer which only Santa has ever seen.

2) There are 2 billion children (persons under 18) in the world. BUT since Santa doesn't (appear) to handle the Muslim, Hindu, Jewish and Buddhist children, that reduces the workload to 15% of the total - 378 million according to Population Reference Bureau. At an average (census) rate of 3.5 children per household, that's 91.8 million homes. One presumes there's at least one good child in each.

3) Santa has 31 hours of Christmas to work with, thanks to the different time zones and the rotation of the earth, assuming he travels east to west (which seems logical). This works out to 822.6 visits per second. This is to say that for each Christian household with good children, Santa has 1/1000th of a second to park, hop out of the sleigh, jump down the chimney, fill the stockings, distribute the remaining presents under the tree, eat whatever snacks have been left, get back up the chimney, get back into the sleigh and move on to the next house. Assuming that each of these 91.8 million stops are evenly distributed around the earth (which, of course, we know to be false but for the purposes of our calculations we will accept), we are now talking about .78 miles per household, a total trip of 75-1/2 million miles, not counting stops to do what most of us must do at least once every 31 hours, plus feeding and etc.
This means that Santa's sleigh is moving at 650 miles per second, 3,000 times the speed of sound. For purposes of comparison, the fastest man-made vehicle on earth, the Ulysses space probe, moves at a poky 27.4 miles per second; a conventional reindeer can run, tops, 15 miles per hour.

4) The payload on the sleigh adds another interesting element. Assuming that each child gets nothing more than a medium-sized lego set (2 pounds), the sleigh is carrying 321,300 tons, not counting Santa, who is invariably described as overweight. On land, conventional reindeer can pull no more than 300 pounds. Even granting that "flying reindeer" (see point #1) could pull TEN TIMES the normal anoint, we cannot do the job with eight, or even nine. We need 214,200 reindeer. This increases the payload - not even counting the weight of the sleigh - to 353,430 tons. Again, for comparison - this is four times the weight of the Queen Elizabeth.

5) 353,000 tons traveling at 650 miles per second creates enormous air resistance - this will heat the reindeer up in the same fashion as spacecrafts re-entering the earth's atmosphere. The lead pair of reindeer will absorb 14.3 QUINTILLION joules of energy. Per second. Each. In short, they will burst into flame almost instantaneously, exposing the reindeer behind them, and create deafening sonic booms in their wake. The entire reindeer team will be vaporized within 4.26 thousandths of a second. Santa, meanwhile, will be subjected to centrifugal forces 17,500.06 times greater than gravity. A 250-pound Santa (which seems ludicrously slim) would be pinned to the back of his sleigh by 4,315,015 pounds of force.

In conclusion - If Santa ever DID deliver presents on Christmas Eve, he's dead now.

too many sites have posted this so i think it's unnecessary to link to the source page XD

Heroes Season 3 Wednesday, September 24, 2008 |

Photobucket

i just definitely can't believe it! one of my most faved tv series of all time, HEROES, started airing their third season this last monday. i wasn't aware that a third season was already in the works, after the writer's guild strike in america, i thought the series is still in hiatus. how did i know heroes was back? the story was i was checking out torrents on isohunt.com for new movie releases, psp games, software, etc. and then i happened to look at the sidebar that shows the top searches for the day. and then i saw it. HEROES was on number two of the list, second only to axxo. "there must be something stirring up," i thought to myself. i haven't checked out on the series for a loooonnnggggggg time.

i got excited, i don't know what to do then. heroes was one of those shows that made me watch t.v., most of the spare time that i have i spend on the web in front of the monitor. and so i went and clicked on the linked. i was more surprised after that. the torrent tags says Heroes.S03E01.HDTV.XviD-0TV.avi and below it another one saying Heroes.S03E02.HDTV.XviD-0TV.avi. are my eyes simply deceiving me or what? and so i downloaded the torrent and waited until all the files were downloaded. well, it took me at least a day to finish downloading. i've just finished it this afternoon. i've checked my torrent download after coming home from work and there it was. DOWNLOAD COMPLETE. mwahahahaha. i just can't contain myself anymore. i've immediately shoved my brother away from the pc (he was using it until then) and watched heroes.

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD

actually there were 3 episodes shown. a flashback episode, summarizing the plot so far for the past two seasons, and the two, YES THERE WERE TWO, premiere episodes which were shown back to back!

EPISODE 1 was titled "THE second coming" and the pacing was really quick and exciting, it quickly got me engrossed. future peter was the one who shot nahan. sylar finally got hold of claire's powers. nathan 'lived again' because of linderman. and YES, LINDERMAN is BACK. i dunno how it happened but i hope it gets to be explained in future episodes. present peter was locked inside another ability users body by future peter maybe by using matt's power. and o yeah, officer parkman was whisked away somewhere, sometime (later found out to be in an african savanna) and hiro was given a mission by his father. i was most intrigued in hiro's story.

hiro was told by his father to protect half of the formula that would make or break the world. the bad part was the moment he got hold of the formula it was instantly whisked away by a speedster whose name i did not catch. nvm.  hiro wanted to find out more and went to the future to see what would be the effect if the formula got stolen and he saw it. ANDO shooting a red-lightning bolt across him, killing future hiro on the spot. i believed that scene permanently made a rift in the relationship between these two buddies. i just hope they get over that rift quickly. interestingly, the speedster woman seems to be able to counter hiro's ability since she can move even though hiro stops/freezes time. this may be explained by time dilation, since hiro has not yet fully recovered in using back his powers, he may may be freezing time the same way he used to before. since the speedster moves SUPER FAST, time slows down for her (as explained by einstein) and hiro's slowing down time isn't slow or FREEZED enough for her and she can still move freely in hiro's time freeze. EPISODE 2 titled "the butterfly effect" involves, sylar breaking in the Company's prison facility to get the powers of other users. unfortunately, elle, blinded with rage after his father's death under sylar's hands let out a devastating electric shock attacked knocking sylar out, but on the bad side let loose many of the imprisoned power users that are the "VILLAINS" which explains the volume title for this season. of course caught up in this is PETER who was trapped in another body by future peter for some reason that i am already tired to type about. also, suresh was able to successfully 'inject'/'activate' powers on himself thanks to maya but at a dangerous price. and that ends the first two premiere episodes of heroes. there are a lot of things that i didn't mention. there was also a foreshadowing of an epic showdown between our beloved heroes and the villains. to BOOT it all it was foreshadowed/precognized by angela petrelli. i haven't got the faintest clue that che got powers. so that explains where the petrelli bros. got their powers. enough with the spoilers. go and watch it for yourself!

one thing that i liked about the first episode was that it was able to tell me how sylar operates on his victims. he is studying the brain activity of his prey and tries to mimic them on his own brain using his intuitive aptitude. so that his brain would mimic the adrenaline activities that give these special people their powers.

here's a dialogue that made it all clear. SYLAR does not eat people's brains. it's gross.

here's a dialogue between claire and sylar...

claire: "are you gonna eat it?"
sylar: "eat your brain? claire, that's disgusting."

and the world will never be rid of sylar ever again... the end... or so i thought until...

i can't wait to see what will happen next on the third episode. Photobucket

adviser Thursday, September 04, 2008 |

for the almost three years that i have served as an educator, there was never a year (yet) that i wasn't given an advisory class to handle.

why am i given such a task? for of all, i have never even imagined myself doing advisory duties, aside that they are additional work. i have to do counseling to my students, that is what i really suck at. i'm not really a people person. i'm not good at giving advice, disciplining, and doing those other things that is expected of an adviser. i hate it especially when the students wanted you to treat them as if they are babies. when they do something, they expect me to stand on their side. everything that they do, i have to tend to. especially when someone gets sent to the guidance office for doing something horrible. hays. for my advisory class last year, i have to deal with being the class treasurer, accounting the money for their class fund. i have to be a party planner as well, planning out christmas parties and yearend outings.

but being an adviser has it perks to. i enjoy the company of some cool and enjoyable students. i realize that they aren't so bad after some time. i get a surprise birthday bash. i get lotsa gifts for christmas. though they aren't really necesary. what i really WISH for for my advisory class is that they act their age, be mature, matutong makisama ng maayos. well, that pretty much sums it all up. sigh.

sana next year hinde na ako adviser. ahahahahaha.

by the way. here are the friendster accounts of the class' whom have given me their own share of headaches, troubles, joy, fun, adventure, tears.

Cypress (1st Qtr SY0607) - UNANG advisory class ko. logo by me, made for their jersey. natutuwa ako sa klaseng ito kasi kahit magulo sila eh nag-iyakan nung malaman na lilipat ako ng advisory class. *sob*

Fermi (SY0809) - my current advisory class, varsity section. na-handle ko na last year kaya mejo kabisado ko na ang galaw at ugali ng ilan sa kanila. but i'm still a long way from really knowing them and getting the most out of them. how can i wake up this dormant class that has great potential to do lots of great things. tamad nga lang. i had a row with them lately and i'd hope they change for the good. go go fiery fermi!
i love my students. i just do hope that they love me too. Photobucket

time to blow off some steam Monday, September 01, 2008 |

what i have to say today would be too censored for any of my readers... mwahahahaha... anyways... what happened today is really got my nerves and i was shaking all over in anger after i couldn't take what my current advisory class has been doing inside our classroom. konting pakikisama lang naman ang hinihingi ko sa inyo eh. kahit tratuhin nio ako na parang kaberks nio lang ay okay lang saken ang akin lang eh makisama naman kayo ng tama.

and the last thing that you wouldn't want me to do is get angry with you guys. rawr.

some japanese words Tuesday, August 05, 2008 |

ohaiyou! okay, for those who do not know it, munsci is recently having japanese language classes every monday and last monday was no different having its usual share of jap lessons from yuneda sensei. yuneda sensei is a good teacher despite the language barrier he could still teach purty well with the aid of racquel sensei. so these so called nihonggo (that's what the japs call it) language classes have started 5 weeks ago and this would be our fourth session already (there were no lessons last week because of the class suspension. anyways, today we practiced writing some basic japanese characters and i think i'm doing pretty good with my A-I-U-E-O's  and Ka-Ki-Ku-Ke-Ko's so far and today we got a bit advanced by  learning several more japanese characters. btw, the characters that we are practicing right now is hiragana which is very good for starters.

so here are some of the words that i've learned today. we had a bingo contest and we filled our bingo cards with words that we learned that day. too bad i didn't won the contest but heck, i learned a lot!

could you guess what the words meant from the pictures that i drew. for those who already knew how to write their characters yiou have the freedom to criticize and comment on my writing. anyways my writing is shaky as i did this drawing on photoshop with my tablet pen. have fun Photobucket

Photobucket

i'd be giving the answers on what the words meant some other time. for the meantime try giving the answers, i might even give out a simple prize. Photobucket

Birthday Album

hooray, my student has just recently uploaded my birthday pics so here they are... captions will come soon XD

monday na naman bukas |

okay, so it's monday again tomorrow and for the nth time i will be facing what i will describe as my "calvary" and that would be teaching the ruddy students of MunSci. mwahahahaha... anyways, one particular section that bugs me the most is that of ii-edison. their noise is something that i would classify as intolerable and irritating (all noise is irritating anyway) but theirs is a different kind that even the teachers with the longest patience would be put to the test when they meet these guys. teaching this set of students really make me go dizzy and all... nakakabaliw....

well yeah that's what i hate about mondays. on the contrary i have something to look forward too on mondays and that is our japanese language classes that i get to 'sit-in' with the other students. last week we weren't able to have our regular classes because of the class suspension.

learning another langauage is definitely cool and a little japanese wouldn't hurt ayt? at least now when i learned the language i wouldn't have to wait for the manga and anime that i'm reading to be translated. wahoo...

wahahahaha... anyways i've added a few cool new features on my blog here at blogspot, take for example the shoutbox that i've placed at the bottom of my blog... you just scroll down 'til you reach the bottom or you could just click the "quickscroll-to-the-bottom" link on the 'pullout page' above.

anyways, i've gotta prepare for my lessons tomorrow which i know will break the hearts of most of my students! mwahahahahahaha *cue evil music*

RP choir snags top prize in Spain competition Thursday, July 31, 2008 |

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Normal University (PNU) Chorale showed the world that Filipinos are among the best singers in the world by winning first prize in one of five categories in the Internacional de Musica de Cantonigros in Spain last week.

The PNU Chorale won the folkloric category with the Visayan song Nok Nok Kamo Kanako, besting 23 other countries from Asia, Europe and Latin America, GMA News' Balitanghali reported on Thursday.

Placing second in the category was Cuba’s Coro De Cámara Vocal Leo, while Indonesia’s Paramabira – Binus University Student Choir shared third place with Aurin Female Choir of Hungary.

"Out of 23 choirs, kami po yung (we were) number one, kami ang (we were) first place, so it really means a lot to us, itong pagkapanalo po nito (this win)," Jade Guerrero, a member of the PNU Chorale.

Even though it was PNU’s first time to enter the said contest, they also won third place in the mixed choirs category, making them winners in two out of the five categories.

Cuba’s Coro Vocal Leo won the top prize, followed by Indonesia’s Paramabira Binus University Choir. Hungary’s Esterhazy Chamber Choir shared the third spot with the Philippines.

They also showcased original Filipino music with a rendition of Manila in the opening ceremonies of the festival in Spain.

The Himig Singers of Southern Mindanao, another Filipino chorale group, also entered the competition.

Ukraine’s Shkolnye captured the top spot in children’s choir, Poland’s Skowrnki Girl’s Choir topped the female category, and Serbia’s Raska Folk Dance Group won in the folk dance contest.

According to Internacional de Musica de Cantonigros’ website, the organizers aim to achieve “a deeper knowledge of other cultures" and “strengthen friendly links among all the countries of the world" through the competition. - KIMBERLY JANE TAN, GMANews.TV
